This adaptive‑reuse project transforms a severely deteriorated metal warehouse into a modern Area Technology Center and district Bus Garage, creating a vital educational and operational asset for Breathitt County Schools. As a key component of the community’s long‑term resiliency strategy following catastrophic flooding in Eastern Kentucky, the project reimagines an abandoned structure as a functional, efficient, and forward‑looking campus supporting both workforce development and essential district services.

The comprehensive renovation involved reconfiguring the building to house a full career and technical education environment alongside a fleet maintenance garage and centralized storage facility. The design brings new life to the existing structure through upgraded building systems, improved circulation, enhanced safety features, and durable, low‑maintenance materials selected to support heavy daily use. Purpose‑built instructional spaces were created to accommodate hands‑on learning, while the new bus maintenance and storage areas provide the district with the operational capacity needed to support reliable student transportation.
